Uketamo
2024
'Uketamo' is a sculptural installation comprised of nine mounds peeking through a bed of pebbles, suggesting that each cavity used to carry a seed.  The nine mounds represent the nine months of a typical pregnancy. Now that the seeds have left their nest, what next? In post-partum a mother can often feel like an empty seedpod, devoid of life and energy.  This piece invites the viewer to consider beauty within the empty and the vulnerable through the philosophy of 'uketamo', one of the five pillar teaching of wabi sabi which means 'to humbly accept with an open heart'. The mirrors directed towards the sky are a symbol for self-reflection, surrendering and turning to our ancestors for guidance.
