open call for love letters
In the Odyssey, Penelope waited for 20 years for her husband Ulysses to come back home.  Towards the end, 106 suitors knocked on her door, courting her, begging her to marry one of them. There is thus no Penelope myth without her infamous suitors.
As part of the ‘House of Penelope’ exhibition curated by Lauren Jones and Alix Janta, artist Adeline de Monseignat is sending out an open call for a participatory experiment: please send us your love letters!

Whoever you decide to address your letter to, please replace her/ his name by ‘Penelope’, and sign ‘Suitor’. The letters will therefore remain absolutely anonymous, unless specified otherwise. There is no restriction in age, sex or type of love letter. Your text could also be the best pickup line you’ve used in life, on social media or online dating site and apps. The experiment aims to highlight the different ways in which people court each other nowadays.  It can be an old letter you have sent in the past or one you have never dared to send, or else something new. It can be as short or long as you wish.
We aim to reach 106 letters so please spread the word! The letters received by email (subject:DEAR PENELOPE’) will be printed and put on display throughout the time of the show in January 2017, alongside those received by post. We strongly encourage hand-written letters. 
You can also come visit the show, write your letter on site and hand it to the artist or curators. ‘House of Penelope’ runs from 7th to 20th January 2017 at Gallery 46, 46 Ashfield Street, London E1 2AJ.
